COACHING IS THE UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE OF

CHANGE AND LEARNING

PHILOSOPHY and PERSONAL STATEMENT:
  • I believe that coaching, at any level, has less to do with knowledge of the sport and more to to with how to communicate that knowledge effectively and safely to the athlete. While certifications are nice, I do not believe they are an indication of a good coach; they are an indication of someone who can take a test on information they have learned and pass, but that does not make a good coach. I have had the privilege of working with some of the best coaches who have taught and exposed me to various coaching methods from Jack Daniels, to Lydiard, to Billy Squires, Canova, and more. I have witnessed the rise of an athlete under a coach with low to moderate knowledge of the sport, and the fall of an athlete under an all knowing coach. This is because it is not about the knowledge alone, especially at the beginning level. It is about the chemistry, and trust between athlete and coach. Trust is, in my opinion, the most important bond between an athlete and coach. Even with perfect* training, without trust, you expose yourself to doubt during difficult workouts or during later stages of the race. Doubt is a toxin to your performance. There are no credentials for trustworthiness. *there is also no such thing as perfect training. I pride myself in being honest and firm but simultaneously supportive and understanding.
